Florida Inquiry Cards | History, Science & Critical Thinking | Wonder Cards
One state. A thousand ways to understand the world.
Florida Wonder Cards™ are printable inquiry cards designed to help students explore Florida as more than a collection of state facts. Through geography, history, science, culture, environment, and human experience, students investigate how people shape places—and how places shape the people who live there.
Each card begins with a carefully researched Florida topic and expands into questioning, discussion, reflection, and independent investigation. Students consider causes and consequences, compare perspectives, examine evidence, make connections across subjects, and explore the larger ideas hidden inside familiar places and events.
The 14-card Florida Deck explores the Everglades, tourism and its impact on the state, Florida’s peninsula geography, freshwater springs, open horizons and landscape, Tallahassee and the history preserved in place names, lightning and weather, orange groves and the citrus industry, population growth, the Space Coast and exploration, St. Augustine and the politics of naming, Indigenous Florida, hurricanes and resilience, and the ways geography, history, culture, science, environment, and human choices shape the relationship between people and place.
Students explore questions about environmental responsibility, tourism and development, natural resources, migration, cultural memory, innovation, exploration, Indigenous history, weather, resilience, and the trade-offs that come with growth and change. The goal is not simply to learn facts about Florida, but to understand how land, water, weather, culture, migration, history, and human decisions continually influence one another.
Each deck includes:
- 14 printable Florida Wonder Cards™
- Concise, carefully researched facts
- Thought-provoking quotations
- Wonder questions that encourage deeper thinking and discussion
- Share prompts for perspective-taking and connection-making
- Research/Explore activities involving investigation, analysis, evidence, mapping, comparison, and creative thinking
- A detailed Conversation Guide with big ideas and follow-up questions
- Standards and learning objectives supporting geography, history, civics, economics, science, reading, writing, research, and discussion
The Florida Deck is especially well suited to approximately grades 4–8, with concrete, place-based topics that can lead into increasingly sophisticated conversations about systems, change, responsibility, culture, and human-environment relationships.
Use Florida Wonder Cards™ for Florida studies, social studies, geography, science, history, enrichment, morning work, whole-class discussion, small groups, homeschool, independent study, research projects, or interdisciplinary learning.
The cards can be used one at a time or woven into a larger Florida unit. One card might lead to a science investigation, a historical research project, an environmental debate, a map study, or a conversation about what it really means to understand a place.
Because when students look closely at one place, they begin to see how the world fits together.
