History Inquiry Cards | Historical Thinking, Evidence, Discussion & Research
The past does not arrive with an answer key.
History Wonder Cards™ are printable inquiry cards designed to help students move beyond simply remembering names, dates, and events and begin thinking about how history is actually constructed—through evidence, interpretation, perspective, memory, and the questions we ask about what remains.
Students examine historical ideas, consider different perspectives, question sources and assumptions, make connections across time, explain their reasoning, and investigate topics more deeply. The goal is not simply to learn what happened, but to help students think more like historians: What evidence do we have? Whose perspective are we hearing? What might be missing? How do we know what we think we know?
The 14-card History Deck explores ancient complaints and everyday evidence, Egyptian games and beliefs about the afterlife, ancient technology, Pompeii graffiti, trade and cultural exchange, Polynesian wayfinding, overlooked labor, the Navajo Code Talkers, natural disasters and historical consequences, the fall of Tenochtitlan, communication technology, Frederick Douglass and photographic representation, Ashoka’s edicts and public accountability, and the ways evidence, perspective, memory, power, and revision shape how we understand the past.
Rather than treating history as a fixed story, Wonder Cards encourage students to recognize that historical understanding can change when new evidence is discovered, different sources are compared, or overlooked voices are brought into the conversation.
Each deck includes:
- 14 printable History Wonder Cards™
- Carefully researched historical facts and thought-provoking quotations
- Wonder questions that move students beyond recall into interpretation and reasoning
- Share prompts for discussion, perspective-taking, and evidence-based conversation
- Research/Explore activities using varied thinking skills such as analyzing, comparing, evaluating, investigating, mapping, designing, and creating
- A detailed Conversation Guide that supports meaningful inquiry without turning discussion into an answer key
- A K–12 standards crosswalk supporting Common Core ELA, C3 Social Studies Inquiry, research, source analysis, historical reasoning, and evidence-based discussion
The cards are especially well suited to middle and high school history and social studies, with the History collection ranked for approximately grades 6–12 because of its emphasis on source analysis, cause and effect, missing perspectives, power, public memory, and historical interpretation.
Use Wonder Cards™ for whole-class discussion, small groups, enrichment, warm-ups, history centers, independent study, homeschool, research extensions, or alongside an existing history curriculum. They can be used one at a time rather than taught as a traditional unit, allowing a single compelling question to become a conversation, investigation, or deeper research project.
Students don’t just learn the story of the past. They learn how to question, examine, and understand the stories we tell about it.
